His dad, the former King of Denmark, has recently died. I won’t go into the details of Shakespeare’s play because I think most people reading this have either read or watched the play, seen one of the many film adaptations of it, or have at least heard what the story is about. At the same time, Hamlet is such a multi-faceted and complex character that there are many different ways to portray him, which is why Olivier, Gibson, and Branagh’s versions are so different from each other. Both the character and the Bard’s play are so significant to Western culture that it would take a stupidly high level of confidence (bordering on arrogance) to try and adapt the play whether it be for film, television, podcast drama, or a TikTok video.

I can think of very few works out there (e.g., The Bible) that are as daunting of a task as Hamlet to adapt into a film. Olivier’s shortened version of the play still remains the best adaptation (but not for the performance). I have “only” seen 3 of those versions: Laurence Olivier, Mel Gibson, and Kenneth Branagh’s versions. There are about 50 filmed version of Hamlet. Hamlet (1948): SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE TWO OF YOU WHO DO NOT KNOW THIS STORY: Watched on Criterion Channel Kate Winslet blew me away, Alan Rickman almost made a grown man cry and Hugh Grant was Hugh Grant.Īny other 90s period movies I should check out? Or any decade honestly! Amazing cast full of future Harry Potter stars. They got everything spot on and I didn't even care if Emma looked older than the book stated. I've never read a Jane Austen book other than Pride and Prejudice back in highschool but this made me read the book. "Sense and Sensibility"- Now a top 5 film all time of mine. Did think the third act could have been better but can't complain about the film. Even thought Keanu Reeves was ok not as bad as people make him out to be in the film. I thought the plot was easy to follow and just an overall an easy watch. "Much Ado About Nothing"- My second favorite Shakespeare film after Othello (1995) or it might just be my favorite. Was pleasantly surprised to see Hugh Grant, Christopher Reeves and even Lena Headey! Amazing script as well "The Remains of the Day"- The fact that Emma and The Anthony Hopkins starred in it knew you were watching a great film. I focused on Emma who we all know was in her prime of her career in the 90s. Recently have been going on binge of 90s movies and I've been doing mostly period movies to start. First of all I have to say I love Emma Thompson such an amazing actress.
